Fall Gifting ("I Care" package): D.I.Y Caramel Apple

Why give your neighbor, child's teacher, friend, college student etc. just an apple? A D.I.Y. Caramel Chocolate apple is so much more fun and tasty!!

Package your gift in a cellophane bag, with a tag and ribbon to make it extra special! Make homemade caramel sauce for that extra touch or buy it from the store. For the pecan praline sauce recipe and the supplies you need to make this gift, see below.

Supplies needed:

Mason Jar

Cellophane bag (I bought mine from Michaels)


Pecan Praline Sauce (recipe below) or store bought caramel sauce

Chocolate Fudge Sauce (store bought)


Pecan Praline Sauce



  • 1 ½ sticks unsalted butter 3 sticks butter 4 ½ sticks butter

  • ¾ cup dark brown sugar 1 ½ cup dark brown sugar 2 ¼ dark brown sugar

  • ½ cup heavy cream 1 cup heavy cream 1 ½ cup heavy cream

  • ¼ teaspoon salt ½ t salt ¾ t salt

  • 2 cups pecans (8 ounces) 4 cups toasted pecans 6 cups pecans


  1. Preheat the oven to 350°. In a large saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar and cook over moderate heat, stirring, until smooth. Stir in the heavy cream and salt and bring to a boil. Simmer just until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes. Let the caramel cool.

  2. Spread the pecans on a rimmed baking sheet and toast for about 8 minutes, until they are lightly browned and fragrant. Transfer the pecans to a work surface and let them cool. Coarsely chop the nuts, stir them into the cooled caramel and serve.

MAKE AHEAD The topping can be refrigerated for up to 1 week. Rewarm slightly before serving.
